7 Exercises To Relieve Arthritis Pain In The Hands

Exercise Nº 1. Make a fist

This exercise can be done at any time and in any place, as soon as you feel stiffness in your hand. 

  • To begin with, extend the left hand and slowly close the fist by putting the thumb outward from the hand.
  • This exercise should be done without putting pressure on the hand, as it can make the pain worse.
  • Open your hand slowly and do the same movement 10 times in a row. Then do the same with the right hand.

Exercise Nº 2. Folding the fingers

  • Extend the palm of the hand and bend the thumb down and then up, holding the position for two seconds.
  • Then do the same exercise with the rest of the fingers, and the whole hand. Repeat this exercise two or three times for each hand.

Exercise No. 3. The curved thumb

  • Extend your left hand and bend your thumb inward against the palm.
  • Stretch the lower part of the little finger towards the thumb, and try to hold the position for a few seconds.
  • Then return to the starting position and do 10 repetitions with each hand.

Exercise Nº 4. Make an “O”

  • With the left hand pointing up, gently curl the fingers inward until they touch the thumb and form an “O”.
  • Hold the position for a few seconds and return to the starting position to repeat the exercise.

Exercise Nº 5. The curved plank

  • Put the edge of the little finger of the left hand on the side of a table, with the thumb facing up.
  • Keeping the thumb in the same position, bend the other four fingers until the hand forms an “L” shape.
  • Hold the position for a few seconds, return to the starting position and do 10 repetitions for each hand.

Exercise Nº 6. Lift your finger

  • Place the left hand on a table, with the palm on the surface.
  • Slowly lift the little finger outward, and gradually do the same with each finger.
  • Hold the position for two seconds, then return to the original position. When the exercise has been done with all the fingers, switch to the other hand.

Exercise Nº 7. Move the wrist

It should be remembered that the wrist is also affected by arthritis pain and stiffness. 

  • To do exercises, you have to put your right arm with your palm facing up.
  • With the opposite hand, press down until you feel a stretch in the wrist and arm.
  • Hold the position for 10 seconds and perform this exercise with the other wrist.

All of these exercises can be done at any time as therapy for the pain and stiffness of arthritis. In fact, they can also be practiced as arthritis pain prevention methods.
