Pneumonia is a very common disease.  It is certain that you know one or more people who have been affected by it.

In fact, it is very common among the elderly. They are also the most likely to suffer from it, because they are weaker and have a much more fragile immune system.

Pneumonia is an infection of the lung caused by the presence of various microorganisms that attack their alveoli. These bacteria inflame them and make them sick.

These are usually viruses, bacteria or fungi, although the main cause of this disease is undoubtedly pneumococcus.

We will give you a simple example for you to understand better:

Our airways have natural defense mechanisms that prevent bacteria from reaching the lungs.

The first thing we do is push them away, coughing. Then, many cells of our immune system come to protect us against these enemies from outside.

But, what happens when we suffer from pneumonia? This disease usually develops when our immune system weakens. Bacteria can get into the alveoli, and we get sick.

Tobacco can also cause pneumonia, as can diabetes, kidney or liver problems.

In these cases, our immune system can weaken and we become more susceptible to many bacteria.

What are the symptoms of pneumonia?

Symptoms of pneumonia.

First of all, it is important to point out that the symptoms of pneumonia are variable.

It is therefore fundamental to divide them into two classes to have a better analysis:

  • Symptoms of typical pneumonia:  in this case, symptoms appear within two to three days.
The patient is often very tired, suffers from pain in the chest, like a kind of pressure which prevents him from breathing normally.
He suffers from a strong cough, usually loaded with phlegm. Fever and chills can also accompany all of these symptoms.
  • Symptoms of atypical pneumonia:  the symptoms in this case are a little more complex, and may make you think of other diseases.
Headache, pain in the joints, fever, muscle discomfort, very dry cough and without phlegm can be felt.
Fatigue is also present, but chest pain is usually milder than with typical pneumonia.

As you can see, the symptoms of pneumonia are not very characteristic.

They usually start to be taken seriously when they are accompanied by a rapid heartbeat, a feeling of tightness, and fainting.

A high fever can also be very dangerous. If you have any doubts, consult your doctor. Most importantly, remember to be careful with children and the elderly around you.
